How do you separate country and content language in multilingual SEO reporting?
Answering “How is our French SEO performing?” with traffic from France alone confuses content language with the country where a search took place. A French guide can be found in several countries, while a person searching from France may reach an English product page. A multilingual SEO report should reveal the content and market decisions needed, rather than compressing both situations into one success number.

Define language through verified page groups
List the pages actually published in each language. Do not assume every URL under /fr/ contains French content: exclude English copies awaiting translation from that language group. Give the inventory fields for URL, visible language, canonical target and subject. This creates a stable basis for later comparisons and makes exceptions explicit.
Google’s dimension documentation explains that performance is generally assigned to the canonical URL. A low count for an alternative address therefore does not, by itself, show that the content was never found. Establish which address receives the data before building the language group.
Treat country as a separate dimension
Search Console’s country dimension describes where a search originated. Content language comes from your verified page inventory; a country filter is not a language filter. Preserve the distinction in report headings: “Searches from France” and “Performance of French content” describe different views.
For a hypothetical manufacturer, create three rows: French product pages in France; those same French pages in Belgium; and English product pages in France. These are report-design examples, not client results. With the same period and search type, the rows help you investigate which content is being found in each market. They do not establish the nationality or purchasing authority of individual visitors.
Group query variants around the same decision
When reviewing phrases such as “stratégie seo multilingue”, “seo multilingue” and “seo site multilingue”, first identify the need behind them. For variants asking the same strategy question, look for a missing decision in the existing guide instead of creating a page for every wording. A request for a service quote may need a different destination from an informational question.
Use a working table with query cluster, intended page, language and decision intent. Keep the cluster definition stable between reporting periods. Review branded questions separately from general business questions. The language of a query cannot establish the searcher’s citizenship, budget or authority to buy; the report does not supply that evidence.
Compare equal periods with consistent filters
A practical starting point is two completed periods of equal length, such as two separate 28-day windows. Record dates, search type, country, device filter and URL group for each view. If new pages were added during one period, note the inventory change instead of interpreting the expanded group as a fixed comparison.
Google’s report overview defines clicks, impressions, click-through rate and position separately. In your own summary, divide total clicks by total impressions for the same scope instead of taking a simple average of row percentages. Avoid describing movements in tiny groups as firm trends. Missing or anonymised queries also mean that an absent row is not automatically evidence of zero demand.
Turn the report into a specific content decision
When a language group has impressions but few clicks, compare the query intent with the answer the page promises. If visitors expect the wrong service, review the service explanation as well as translation quality. Where a market needs a different commercial process, verify contact and quotation requirements rather than producing near-identical country-name pages.
Keep a change record with the section to improve, the reason, the actual editing date and the next equal comparison period. This method connects the technical and editorial work in our multilingual SEO guide to a repeatable review. Our SEO service also starts from explicit evidence boundaries; a report cannot guarantee rankings.
Frequently asked questions
Does the France filter show only French searches?
No. Country indicates the geography of the search. Use verified page groups separately to analyse content language.
Should each French keyword variation have its own page?
When the variants concern the same decision, improve the existing useful guide first. A separate page needs a distinct, useful question.
