Can customers copy a product code instead of typing it again?
A customer has found a component and wants to send its code to purchasing. If the identifier exists only in a photograph, it must be retyped. If the copy button collects the whole page, the customer has to remove unwanted text. The decision is not simply to add another button. Identify what customers need to carry into another task, then make that information dependable. MX-240-A is an illustrative product code used in the examples below.

Make the identifier real, selectable text
Do not leave the model code exclusively on a photographed label or inside a PDF. Display it as a separate text field near the product name. Check that wrapping a long line does not introduce a hyphen, space or other character into the copied identifier. Allow text selection instead of disabling it for visual styling.
For example, MX-240-A can appear beside a clear “Model” label. When a variant changes, the associated code must update correctly. Leaving the previous variant’s code beneath a new photograph transfers the wrong information even if the copy interaction works perfectly. Verify the product data before verifying the button.
Treat a code and a product summary as different tasks
“Copy code” should copy only the required identifier. A customer carrying more context into an enquiry might benefit from a separate “Copy product summary” action. Explain nearby that the summary contains the product name, model and permanent page link.
An unlabelled copy icon does not communicate that distinction. If several products appear on one page, make it clear which row each action belongs to. Do not unexpectedly include the customer’s notes or unrelated selected text. The copied information should match the product record the customer is looking at.
Show success only when the operation succeeds
MDN documents that Clipboard.writeText requires a secure context. Its returned Promise resolves when the clipboard has been updated, while permission failures can produce an error. Attach the “Copied” message to that successful result instead of assuming success immediately on click. MDN documentation.
On failure, offer a usable explanation such as “Could not copy. Select the code to copy it manually.” Avoid reloading the page and losing the customer’s position. This task does not require reading existing clipboard contents; solve the narrower need to write the identifier the visitor chose.
Keep the task possible without the button
Copying is an enhancement. If the browser does not allow it, the code should remain readable and selectable. Check long-press selection on mobile and mouse or keyboard selection on desktop. Do not make one particular clipboard interface the only way to obtain the identifier.
- Reach the button by keyboard and check its visible focus state.
- Verify that success or failure feedback is readable near the action.
- Test whether an assistive-technology user receives the result.
- Paste the copied value into a plain-text field and compare leading and trailing spaces.
Use your own controlled test text rather than reading a real customer’s clipboard.
Use three data cases for acceptance
Choose a short code, a long hyphenated code and one that changes when a product variant is selected. Compare the visible identifier, the action’s intended content and the pasted result. Similar characters such as 0 and O or 1 and I need an exact data comparison, not a visual guess.
Our Gerhman project page is a relevant technical-catalogue reference. This article does not claim that the site has a copy feature or that we measured an outcome there. For your catalogue, our website design service can address the product field and the customer’s information-transfer task together. The cover is a conceptual scene, not a photograph of a customer product or result.
Frequently asked questions
Does every product row need a copy button?
No. It can be useful where customers frequently transfer codes into other systems. Start with selectable text and add the action where the task justifies it.
Can we insert spaces to make a code easier to read?
Visual formatting should not change the actual identifier copied. If the master record contains no spaces, do not add them to clipboard output. Solve long-code layout without altering the value.
