Establish the actual product state first

“Out of stock” can conceal several different situations. A temporary supply gap, a made-to-order item and a discontinued model need different explanations. The designer cannot determine this alone. Ask sales and operations which transactions or enquiries they can genuinely handle, then agree on a small, consistent set of status labels.

Record an owner and a review date alongside the catalogue state. One unavailable variant does not mean the entire range is unavailable. If only the walnut finish has sold out, avoid incorrectly disabling all other finishes. After changing a selection, visitors should understand exactly which variant the status describes.

Match the action to the situation

For a temporary shortage, offer a stock notification only if a functioning notification process exists. Otherwise provide a clear route to ask the team. Do not invent a restock date to fill an empty space. If no date is confirmed, say so and explain what a customer can do while waiting.

Made-to-order products may need a conversation about dimensions, materials and timing rather than a conventional stock message. For a discontinued model, explain suitable alternatives. Do not automatically label a more expensive product as its replacement. Sales or technical staff should verify differences in size, compatibility and use before that relationship is published.

Consider existing owners as well as new buyers

Installation documents, maintenance instructions or spare-parts information can remain useful after sales end. A page may change from a purchasing destination into a support resource. Keep the model code clear so existing owners do not confuse their item with a newer alternative. Do not remove useful documentation merely to simplify the product grid.

Deletion and redirection are separate decisions based on content value and visitor needs. Sending every old product link to an unrelated homepage does not explain what happened. This guide addresses availability messages; use the separate checks in our website redesign and old-URL guide when the address itself must change.

Compare three distinct next steps

Check visible content and technical data together

Google’s product documentation distinguishes availability values such as out of stock and discontinued. If structured data is used, keep it consistent with the actual state shown to visitors. Adding markup alone does not guarantee a particular appearance in search results.

During handover, open the category card, product detail, selected variant and enquiry or checkout step in sequence. Do they agree? Our Erhan Mobilya project page offers portfolio context for product and project presentation; this article does not claim that its illustrative inventory model is implemented there. Include responsibility for status updates in the website design scope, alongside the initial layouts.

Frequently asked questions

Should every unavailable product be deleted?

No. Consider future sales, support information and visitor needs together. An accurate status message is the first step.

What if no delivery date is confirmed?

Say that timing is unconfirmed and provide a working contact route. An estimate should not be presented as a guaranteed delivery commitment.
